HE MAKE-UP ISSUE is renowned for the superb level of training and this can be attributed to the fact that instruction is given by experienced make-up artists who bring and interpret the very latest fashion trends in their lessons.

"What sets our academy apart from others is the fact that we actively give our students opportunities to assist their lecturers on productions & photographic/film shoots, to name a few: SA Fashion Week (Cape Town & Jo'Burg); Face of Africa; MTN SA Music Awards; SA Fusion Cover; Miss Africa Renaissance; SA Model of the year for 1995 - 2001 giving them authentic insight into the industry they are about to enter and they are often recruited by some of the top production companies and cosmetic houses in the country. This experience is invaluable to students," comments founder and principal, Abie Viljoen.

Students are also encouraged to participate in various make-up contests throughout the year to increase their experience and exposure to the industry. Along with a thorough working knowledge of the techniques and materials, a successful make-up artist also needs to have acute business acumen and a strong professional portfolio - it is this practical experience that grooms graduates for this highly competitive industry, and successful make-up artists need not only have a thorough working knowledge of the techniques and materials, but also to be completely professional in their approach.

The academy accepts both male and female students from the age of sixteen, who are interested in the field of film, television, theatrical and fashion photographic make-up. Abie Viljoen explains further "With the emphasis on practical experience, a creative flair, maturity and a great personality are the most important traits for our graduates rather than past academic achievements." Through the duration of the course there is a strong emphasis on building an excellent portfolio which acts as the best marketing tool to showcase their skills in the industry, contrary to what some may say a diploma or certificate from international or national institutions hold little credit alongside a powerful portfolio. The course is also highly recommended for teachers of drama & dance.
